What hardware and software equipment does my child need to be successful in an online school?

What does “flexible scheduling” mean?

We focus on flexible scheduling options and cater our students’ learning plans to best fit their needs. All of our students receive a high level of individualized attention to set them up for success in every area of their life. For example, a student-athlete who spends five hours per day training in gymnastics may personalize their education plan to take core classes during their “off season” and elective courses when they are traveling for gymnastic competitions.

Another example is an academically talented student who obtained high school credits in middle school and wants to graduate in three years to go abroad after high school. The specialized learning experience created for this student may include fast-track courses and concurrent enrollment at a community college to facilitate early graduation.

What is a “blended learning” model?

A blended learning model means that students may learn and participate via multiple formats. We are pleased to offer a full spectrum of blended learning—from 100 percent asynchronous online learning where students progress at their own pace to synchronous learning via an online classroom setting where students interact with instructors and peers in real time. We also provide in-person tutoring at Community Learning Spaces. PPOA students may “mix and match” based on their individual preferences and as their schedules permit.

How many instructional minutes are required per day to be considered a full-time student?

We require full-time students at PPOA to complete about 330 instructional minutes per day (depending on the grade level). Parents attest attendance via a Google Form. Once students complete their daily instructional minutes, they can spend the rest of the school day pursuing their athletic, artistic, or academic talents. Students who cannot complete instructional minutes Monday through Friday may work on weekends or when they have extra time throughout the school year.

What is a charter school?

The state of Arizona defines charter schools as “public, state-funded schools that serve as alternatives to traditional public schools. Charter schools were created through legislation in 1994. Charter schools contract with a charter school sponsor or authorizer to provide an education service. Charter schools cannot charge tuition to Arizona residents.” To learn more about Arizona charter schools, visit the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools website.
